About Us
Senior Psychiatrists, Inc., founded in 2012, is an outgrowth of the American Psychiatric Association (APA) "Lifers." Prior to 2012, the "Lifers" were managed by the APA Foundation. Today, Senior Psychiatrists, Inc. is an "Allied Organization" to APA and has representation in the APA Assembly.Membership in the Senior Psychiatrists, Inc. is open to any member of the American Psychiatric Association who is a Life Member, Life Fellow, or Life Distinguished Fellow. There are potentially approximately 8,000 members of APA who have Life status, and this represents about 20% of the APA membership. The organization is now poised for growth and has put the infrastructure in place to reach out it expanding potential membership base.
In November of 2014, Senior Psychiatrists, Inc., was granted 501(c)3 tax exempt status by the IRS. This means that donations to the organization are now tax deductible. This status reinforces the group’s credibility as a resource for the psychiatric community.
Senior Psychiatrists, Inc. fulfills its mission by working collaboratively with APA to meet the special needs of older members, as well as providing mentoring and serving as role models for Resident Fellow Members and Early Career Psychiatrists.
Each year, the Senior Psychiatrists, Inc. hosts one or more seminars, a Board and Annual Business Meeting, and Member Reception as part of the APA Annual Meeting. The Berson Award, recognizing a Life member of APA and Senior Psychiatrist for their professional contributions is presented at the Member Reception.
Launched with the Winter 2015 issue, the Senior Psychiatrist magazine is an online publication distributed to members, as well as to prospective members. The magazine offers in depth articles of special interest to older psychiatrists, but it also include timely topics relevant to the practice of psychiatry. This magazine in now published four times each year and replaces the Lifers Line newsletter. Articles are welcomed from members.
Over time, Senior Psychiatrists Inc., is developing online resources available to members, thereby enhancing the value of membership. Details will be announced as available.
