Topic:  History, Aging, Discrimination and Impairment (Session 1676)

Brief Description:     This symposium is sponsored by the Senior Psychiatrists and will review the research that provides convincing evidence of brain plasticity with aging in people who keep themselves active physically cognitively and socially. A number of empirical studies have demonstrated that positive factors such as resilience optimism wisdom and social support are associated with better physical and mental health and even longevity with effect sizes that parallel or exceed those of pharmacological interventions. Physicians in general and psychiatrists in particular have unique opportunities to enhance their own psycho bio social functioning in later life while also contributing to the society‚Äôs well-being. This presentation will discuss specific strategies of successful aging among psychiatrists.
